Scoring Snow Drawings

I first encountered Sonja Hinrichsen's snow drawings in Colossal, an online publication of art, design and visual culture.

Before reading the article, my eye was drawn to an aerial image of her expansive environmental work, Snow Drawings at Catamount Lake. I immediately began following the lines and curves as if it were a musical score.

When creating new sound works I often derive partial inspiration from my surroundings – a snippet of birdsong here, an air-conditioner drone there – but here was a richly detailed and fully-formed sonorous score waiting to be interpreted.

And so I did, the results of which are Work For Cello And Electronics : Parts 1&2 ~ Inspired by Sonja Hinrichsen's Snow Drawings at Catamount Lake.

Following the creation of this two part sound work, I approached Sonja and presented them to her for consideration. It was an honor to hear she found the collaboration pleasing.
